hi Bullseye,

a other question is: why do you need a AA-Option in a preview. I want it fast, faster and super fast, but you are right, the preview is very blurring.

second way: start Max again ( two max open) and load the openexr Preview as a background map in the empties szene and use the mia_exposure_simple with the same value, but "use preview" is "off".

Good idea, Also for speed, I like to hide any objects in the scene while I do exposure tests, it avoids loading anything.

I guess, I would like to use it like I adjust the exposure in post. But as it says its a preview for adjusting the exposure not for rendering finals.
I like the idea of hiding everything in the scene.

I'm finding setting the physical Log Exposure to 80000 is no good for dusk/ sunset/ night time. What is your experience with this ?

I didn't get how to create preview.
What is that OpenEXR?
I download it but there's no exe file to make it launch.

Maynard,
You have to render to exr file format, click the preview button and load the the exr file. Then you can adjust the exposure without having to render FG or scene loading times.
Just make sure you read Hotchips tutorial for details.

i dont have the mia explosure simple shader.how can i use the mia explosure shader to work with max 8?

I'm pretty sure mia_simple_exposure is a 3dsmax 9/ MR 3.5v shader. I don't think it would work in 3dsmax 8 even if you had it.

thats sad to hear cuz it seems to be the best approach to handle exposure control with mental ray...is there an efficient way to handle exposure control in max8(log exp control is not good enough alone)...please help

Yeah, I remember that exposure control was terrible in max 8.

You could try the one Pixero's did:

BTW, my mia_exposure_simple is aways coming with 0 in the fields, but my declare in the file architectural.mi looks ok:

declare shader "mia_exposure_simple" (

scalar "knee" default 0.5,
scalar "compression" default 2.0,
scalar "gamma" default 2.2,
color texture "preview",

yes, thats are the default value and your Monitor say 1.8 or 2.2 gamma value.
