Motion Blur

You are here: mental ray cookbook / motion blur

Motion blur is a real-world camera artifact which occurs when the objects move relative to the camera while the shutter is open. There are mostly three reasons for computer graphics to mimic that effect:

  1. to match footage shot with a real camera (e.g. when adding CG elements to film or video material)
  2. to avoid strobing effects in animations if the frame rate is too low for persistence of vision
  3. as artistic tool to express rapid motion

To get motion blur with mental ray in 3ds Max, there are five methods:

  1. normal standard raytraced motion blur using the "time samples"
  2. a special variant of raytraced motion blur that applies when time_samples=0. Rarely used, but exists. To use that mode, use the same min- and max- image samples, and time samples=0.
  3. fast rasterizer motion blur
  4. 2D post blur using 3ds max "image" motion blur
  5. 2D post blur using the mip_motionblur
